Cancun's world-famous hotel zone had a development divided into three stages: The first included the area between Bahía de Mujeres and Punta Cancún, as well as the coast reaching the inner limit of the Bojorquez Lagoon. The second stage started from the Bojorquez Lagoon to Punta Nizuc, and the last one went from the south of this specific point to the area that borders the territorial reserve.
The way in which it was designed, as well as the way in which the area of the hotel zone was divided, promoted the conceptual idea of "superblocks," which are large blocks of cities that are also separated by large avenues. The first division of the urban area in Cancun focused on what would be the city's main street, Tulum Avenue. The Town Hall was built on the largest piece of land in this area.
Some interesting numbers about Cancun's hotel zone
Something to note is that the most complicated project was the engineering for the creation of the hotel zone. The amount of topsoil used both for the golf course and for the parts that are around what's known as Las Ruinas del Rey, for the airport road, and for the extension of the island amounts to an equivalent of more than 500 hectares, as well as more than 370,000 m3 of mangrove swamps were dredged so that the exchange of water between the sea and the lagoons was more efficient.
The Bojorquez, Playa Blanca, and Cancún Caribe hotels were the first to open in 1974. This was followed by the opening of the international airport, with more than 2,600 meters of runway and operating capacity available for wide-cabin aircraft, so from its beginnings, it is suitable to receive a large volume of tourists and passengers for business purposes, among others.
It was then that the existing government agencies at the time and those in charge of these works on the island of Cancun merged, giving way to the creation of FONATUR (National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism in Spanish). In 1974, Quintana Roo was also declared a State, so the project in process of Cancun, which was then supervised by the government of the district of Isla Mujeres, also became part of the then district of Benito Juárez, currently a municipality of Mexico City.
